I know I can’t go camping without my baby coat, so I thought I would try my hand at DIYing some DIY black trench coats.
The coat I came up with is a very simple idea, but it can be quite a challenging project to construct.
First things first, the coat needs to be built to the right size.
A child’s winter coat needs an elastic waistband that can be adjusted and pulled in and out to fit their child’s torso.
To keep it all in place, the waistband needs to have a hole drilled in it for the elastic waist band to stay in place.
Next, I started by assembling the coat.
I used my sewing machine to sew the waist band on the inside of the coat and the bottom of the pockets.
Once the elastic is in place on the waistbands, I cut a hole in the back of the waist bands and drilled a hole to insert the elastic into.
From there, I used a little tape to attach the elastic to the waist straps.
After attaching the elastic, I attached the back and front straps using a little hook.
Here’s a closer look at the coat:I’m going to keep it simple, but I hope you guys will take away a few tips from this project.
First, it’s really important to use the right elastic for the right fit.
If you’re using a elastic waist strap that has a hole that doesn’t allow the elastic for any movement, it will give your coat a bit of an awkward fit.
To help with this problem, I suggest purchasing a waist belt with an elastic that is a bit more flexible.
You’ll also need a small zip tie to secure the elastic.
Lastly, you’ll need to make sure the elastic does not get caught in the zipper.
This is especially important for baby coats that don’t have a zipper.
The elastic needs to stay inside the zipper as you pull the coat out of the pack, so make sure it doesn’t get caught.
Finally, you can add an extra layer of insulation to the coat, if you like.
My coat is actually quite small so I can probably add a few layers of insulation for comfort.
Before you begin, you need to secure your seams with a seam stitcher.
Then you’ll add the elastic onto the waist belts and the waist pockets.
You can use a sewing machine or an adjustable sewing machine, but if you’re comfortable with a sewing board, you should definitely use a machine.
Finally, attach the bottom and front layers of the fabric to the elastic using the seam stitter.
There you have it, a very easy DIY winter coat!
I hope this tutorial has inspired you to start building your own winter coat.
