The president said the GOP will “take tough decisions” if Democrats don’t vote for the legislation.
“I’m sure we’ll take those tough decisions, and I’m sure they’ll be smart ones,” Trump said at a news conference Thursday afternoon.
“And I’ll be able to tell you the hard decisions will be made by our leaders.”
Trump’s comments come as Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer and House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi are both expected to vote for a bipartisan immigration reform bill that includes a path to citizenship for some undocumented immigrants.
Democrats have been divided over the bill since it was unveiled in early October.
They have signaled support for a pathway to citizenship, but the Senate is not expected to move quickly on the legislation, which is also expected to include a pathway for legal immigration.
Trump’s tweet comes after his administration issued an executive order on Thursday, saying the president is “ready to move ahead with a DACA fix.”
The White House had previously indicated that DACA protections would be extended in the event of a DACA deal being reached.
Trump has made clear that he wants to end DACA and has indicated he will pursue a path of legal immigration for some of the estimated 11 million immigrants who are here illegally.
