In 2018, Burlington was ranked #1 in the country in salary for employees with college degrees, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics.
The city also had the highest median income for employees in the US.
Burlington has a population of 1.6 million and an annual budget of $6.3 billion.
In a city that is home to the US’ largest university, there are more than 3,400 colleges and universities.
But the city’s salary is only a small part of what makes the place one of the best in the nation.
According to the U.S. Census Bureau, Burlington has one of three lowest unemployment rates in the U, which is the second lowest rate among the 10 largest metropolitan areas in the United States.
And in the city of just over 3 million, nearly 6 percent of the population works in the restaurant industry, according the Bureau.
The Burlington Coat Factory was founded in 1869, and the company is still run today.
Its employees are paid well and they have benefits.
“They’re very well trained and very well compensated,” said John R. Smith, a retired manager at the factory.
Smith has been working at the plant since 1984.
It’s a job that pays well, and he said he never feels underpaid.
“[It’s] a good opportunity for someone to get a job,” Smith said.
“I don’t get sick, I don’t lose my job.”
Burmont has a relatively high percentage of workers with bachelor’s degrees, compared to its rural neighbors.
In 2017, nearly 12 percent of Burlington’s workforce had a bachelor’s degree, compared with 10 percent in neighboring Burlington, according a Brookings Institution report.
Despite the high percentage, the city is home for some of the highest rents in the state.
Last year, the average rent in Burlington was $1,400, up 9.5 percent from 2016, according census data.
Bills to increase rent rates are currently being considered by the Burlington City Council, according to the Burlington Free Press.
There is also a $1.6 billion budget gap between the city and its surrounding areas.
If all goes according to plan, the Burlington Coat factory could see an increase in wages in 2019.
A few years ago, the company made a big splash when it raised its minimum wage to $10.10 per hour.
Today, the union representing the factory’s workers says that wage hike hasn’t been enough to keep the factory humming.
Workers have been working overtime for years without a raise, said Chris Paz, the president of the Burlington Workers Union.
He said the union has pushed the city to increase its wage, but the mayor has refused.
On Tuesday, the workers will hold a rally outside the factory and rally outside City Hall, as well as a march in downtown Burlington.
For Smith, the experience has taught him a few lessons about what it takes to be a successful business owner in the Burlington area.
What I learned in my life is the importance of giving back, he said.
Working in a restaurant, he added, is a different world than what you might be used to working in a hotel or a warehouse.
Paz said he’s glad he’s been able to take advantage of the opportunities that have been provided to him, and that’s the biggest lesson of all.
This is an industry that’s always been here in Burlington,” he said, adding that the people here are always supportive.
We want people to know that we’re working hard and we’re not going to give up, he concluded.
